Community Outreach – A Letter from the President

Pro Carpet Community Outreach Program

Like so many people these days, I have felt the sting of loss caused by cancer. My mother, Mary Cole, was born in 1944. While married to my father, Roger, she gave birth to three children—myself and my two sisters. She was a wonderful woman, always striving to better our character. I remember one specific incident where, on a shopping trip to Macy’s, she refused to enter the building until I opened the door for her. Though her method of teaching me to be courteous was embarrassing at the time, I have never again failed to hold the door for a lady. This is something that I have passed on to my son as well.

Armed Forces Day

Happy Armed Forces Day from Pro Carpet!

Today is Armed Forces Day! It is a day in celebration of the five forces here in the  United States. These forces include the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corp and  Coast Guard. Although remembered by many, this holiday is not usually celebrated  in the same way as others. This holiday is one in commemoration of anyone who  served in the forces, whether they are young, old, serving or retired. In some  areas, cities will still put together parades, receptions, or air shows  especially for this day.

The best way to show how much you care about the people or person around  you in the service is to do something meaningful and personal. Here are some  ideas…

  1. Patriotic gifts of any sort are a favorite.
  2. Baskets full of goodies sent with love.
  3. Cookies are nice. Kids can help with these, and this is a great time to be  creative and add patriotic colors.
  4. If you know several people in the forces, it is also a nice gesture to  have a community cookout in honor of these people and have them present as special guests.
  5. If you do not know anyone that has served or is serving, now is a great  time to send a goody box to a soldier who is currently serving.

These are all great ways to make these important people  feel special on this  day or any day of the year.

Note: Do not get this day confused with Memorial Day, which is also in the  month of May. Memorial Day is a day reserved for all of our fallen heroes.

The Origin of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is just around the corner (and we hope all you moms out there have a happy one!), but do you know how the day came to be?

Today, Mother’s Day, or “Mothering Sunday,” is celebrated all over the world. For  florists and card shops, the event is one of the highlights of the year, but the  roots of Mother’s Day are not commercial.  Motherhood has been celebrated  since ancient times. The ancient Greeks paid homage to Rhea, the Mother of Gods, and there are records of the ancient Romans worshiping a mother Goddess known as  Cybele as early as 260 BC. Festivals took place in the spring which was the most  fertile time of the year.

The more modern way of honoring mothers began in England in the 1600′s, where  Mothering Sunday was observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This day is also known as “Refreshment Sunday,” the only day when you are allowed to eat or do whatever you have given up for Lent. Not surprisingly, families came together and took the opportunity to party with a big meal at which mother was treated as  the guest of honor. Traditionally, mothers were given flowers and a cake.

Carpet Cleaning: Don’t Stick to “DIY”

Wall-to-wall carpeting gives any home a rich, luxurious feel. Maintaining the look of your carpeting with regular vacuuming is easy, and there are plenty of good cleaning products available to handle the occasional spot cleaning it will need. When it comes to getting your carpet deep-down clean, nothing comes close to professional carpet cleaning (from Pro Carpet! Wink).

Professional carpet cleaning will get every last bit of dirt and grime out of your carpet. The combination of high-powered suction and steam, along with professional strength carpet cleaning machines, will make any carpet look like new. It’s best to have professional carpet cleaning performed several times a year, preferably when the seasons change and after large gatherings in your home. If you have pets and family members who suffer from allergies or respiratory ailments, you should have your carpets cleaned more often. Professional carpet cleaning removes allergens, pet dander, and the debris that can lead to poor air quality in your home; having it done regularly will ensure your family will always be breathing clean, healthy air.

Clean carpets by Pro Carpet!

Pro Carpet is committed to helping you keep your whole house clean and fresh. We not only clean your carpets, but your rugs, furniture, and draperies as well. Oriental rugs, drapes, and upholstered furniture need the same tender loving care as carpeting, and they should be cleaned regularly to look their best. This service is performed right in your home, so there is no need to take down drapes, roll up carpets, or send furniture out for cleaning. Try having your furniture and carpets cleaned when you know everyone will be out of the house for an extended period of time. That way, everything can dry completely.

Season changes are the perfect time to consider getting your carpets cleaned. Call Pro Carpet at 770-933-8007 for a consultation and to arrange an appointment. Why not spend your time in a clean, healthy home?

Five Misconceptions People Have About Carpet Cleaning

Clean carpets by Pro Carpet!

Misconception #1: You should wait as long as possible before cleaning your carpet.
No. Dirt is abrasive – like sandpaper. Every time you step on the carpet, you grind dirt into your carpet fibers. This cuts your carpet just as if you had used a knife, causing it to wear out faster. A dirty carpet will not last nearly as long as a clean carpet. While vacuuming helps, by itself, it’s simply not enough. The longer you wait to have your carpet cleaned, the more damage you do to your carpet, and the faster it wears out.

Misconception #2: The only reason to clean carpets is to get out the dirt.
No. As you probably know, outdoor air contains pollens, fungus, bacteria, air pollution, cigarette smoke, car exhaust, and hundreds of other chemicals. When you and your family members come into your home, you carry those pollens, bacteria, and chemicals in your hair and on your skin, clothing, and shoes. Not surprisingly, all of those chemicals, pollens, and bacteria wind up – you guessed it – in your carpet.
If you have allergies, asthma, emphysema, or other breathing problems, one major source of your problem could be the pollens, fungus, and chemicals in your carpet. In addition, as you may know, tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 different chemical compounds, 43 of which cause cancer. Even if you don’t smoke, those chemicals get on your shoes, you track them in to your home, and you leave them in your carpet. If you’re sensitive to cigarette smoke, you might find that you’ll breath easier after you hire a company to get those harmful chemicals out of your carpet.

Spring is here!

Yesterday marked the official first day of spring. You know what that also marks? The start of a battle against pollen-induced allergies! We understand that frustrations that can come along with the onslaught of the dreaded yellow dust, so we’d like to help arm you with some helpful tips and hints on how to win the war this spring.

Allergy Relief

  1. Avoid pollen when you can. Stay indoors during high pollen counts – typically in the morning and on dry, breezy days.
  2. Keep your windows closed, especially during the day. Use an air conditioner instead. We recommend having your air ducts cleaned (by Pro Carpet, of course!) to help reduce pollen and other allergen triggers that may be lining your system.
  3. Wash your hands and other exposed skin when you come inside, and shower before going to bed to rinse pollen from your skin and hair.
  4. Don’t just tough it out – medications can help. Allergists often recommend non-sedating antihistamines and decongestants. Nasal rinse products are also useful. For longer-term symptoms: non-sedating antihistamines with prescription nasal-steroid sprays and/or prescription eye drops.
  5. Instead of dry sweeping or dry dusting, which can stir up pollen, use wet cloths to clean up.
  6. If you have a pet, wipe down its fur, which gets laden with pollen, before it comes inside.
  7. If grass pollen is a problem, have someone else mow your lawn.
  8. If you have asthma, make sure you’re taking the proper level of medications. Pollen is a common trigger for asthma symptoms and attacks. Asthma action plans may need adjusting in pollen season.

Spring is here

Cheers to a wonderful spring season!
